2009 JEEP LIBERTY OVERVIEW

The 2009 Jeep Liberty is one of the best in its class and a very capable machine off the road. Compared to the Compass and the Jeep models, the Liberty is more of the true Jeep that has upright and bold styling and prowess off of the road. The 2009 Jeep Liberty has been improved over previous models refinements to its brakes, steering and suspension.


The 2009 Jeep Liberty is more angular and taller than in previous years and reminds one of the Jeep Cherokee. The current model is much large than it has been in the past and is has a 2.0” longer wheelbase and is 2.5: longer overall. While it still maintains all of the ruggedness of older models, it rides much smoother.

All of the 2009 Liberty models come with a 3.7 liter V6 engine that produces 210 hp. A automatic four speed transmission is standard in 2009, but this is somewhat antiquated in light of the six speed automatic transmissions. The automatic four speed transmission doesn’t help the 3.7 liter V6 engine much. As far as fuel economy, the Liberty’s power train and weight provide EPA numbers that leave much to be desired.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty comes with some options. In addition to the part time all wheel drive system the 2009 model is available a full time all wheel drive system. The 2009 Jeep Liberty is a vehicle that performs very well off road as a result of both of the four wheel drive systems which are helped by hill descent control and hill start assist.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty has good ride quality and pleasant road manners. It is stable on the highway, irons outs most of the bumps on the highway, but rides firmly. However, on order for the 2009 Jeep Liberty to have such good off road prowess it sacrifices some handling capability. It feels somewhat floppy in tight turns and leans in slower turns. In this respect it is similar to the Ford Escape and the Nissan Xterra. However, if you’re to a rough road you would rather be in a 2009 Jeep Liberty.

There is plenty of room for five on the inside of the 2009 Jeep Liberty. However, it does lack in terms of the fit, finish, and quality of materials. Previous Liberty’s had closer panel gaps and softer touch surfaces and the 2009 Jeep Liberty uses more surfaces made from hard plastic. But, the interior is still nice.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty has plenty of cargo room. Both the front passenger seat and the flat folding second row seats provide plenty of room to carry life’s necessities such as bicycles and boxes.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty is a good choice for couples or small families the go camping or tow a boat because of the cargo space, the capability to go off road, and the maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. No other small SUV will provide you with a better ride or take you off road, although they may deliver better handling and fuel economy.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty is available with both with four or rear wheel drive. The models are the Limited four wheel drive, the Sport four wheel drive, and the Sport two wheel drive. What comes standard is the 3.7 liter V6 engine which produces 210 hp with an automatic four speed transmission.

The basic four wheel drive system is the Command Trac, which is a part time system that was designed for us off road. A full time system that permits the use for four wheel drive on dry pavement is also offered and is called the Selec-Trac II. There is low range gearing in both of these systems.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty Sport model features include aluminum wheels on all terrain tires sized P225/75R16, a vehicle information center, AM/FM/CD/MP3 auxiliary and stereo input jack, remote keyless entry, power windows. Power locks, power mirrors, 55/35 split folding rear seats, tilt steering wheel, air conditioning, and cloth upholstery. The stereo includes a Sirius satellite radio and the stereo is upgraded to six speakers in 2009. The 2009 Jeep Liberty Sport model options include deep tinted glass, external compass and temperature, cruise control, roof rails, a seat the folds flat, a front passenger seat that folds flat, fog lights, a cargo compartment cover, an auxiliary 115 volt power outlet, clothe upholstery that is stain resistant, skid plates for the four wheel drive model, all terrain tires sized 235/70R16, a Class III towing package with a trailer sway control and a full size spare tire, a regularly sunroof, and a canvas sunroof.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty Limited comes standard with a 6 CD/DVD changer with Uconnect, a premium sound group, touch screen display and a USB port, a Uconnect wireless phone link, GPS navigation with a memo function and voice recognition, a multimedia entertainment system with a 29 GB hard drive, and integrated AM/FM receiver with a CD/ DVD player, chromed aluminum wheels and all season tires sized P235/60R18, rear obstacle detection, automatic wipers, an interior air filter, a power passenger seat, automatic climate control, a driver’s seat the is powered six ways with remote starting and memory, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a full size spare all season tires sized P235/65R17 on aluminum wheels, fig lights, an antitheft alarm, a universal garage door opener, a front passenger seat that folds flat, roof rails, an automatically dimming rearview mirror, a vehicle information center control centers, redundant audio, a steering wheel that is wrapped in leather, cruise control, a 368 watt infinity sound system with eight speakers, power mirrors that are heated, and cloth upholstery.

The safety features on the 2009 Jeep Liberty include the head protecting side curtain airbags with rollover sensors the dual front airbags and the side curtain airbags and rollover sensors to protect the head and the front side airbags for torso protection. The active safety features include electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, traction control, hill start assist, and anti locking brakes, and brake assist. Rough road detection is included with the antilock brakes so that when rough roads are detected, the system will better slow the vehicle down by holding the brake pulses longer. Standard on the four wheel drive models is the hill descent control. A detection system for rear obstacles and trailer sway control are the optional safety features.
The 2009 Jeep Liberty is all Jeep. It is 0.8” wider and 2.5” longer than the model of years. The wheelbase is also 1.8” longer. The previous year’s models had softer lines and skewed women to men consumers 60/40. The 2009 Jeep Liberty model is designed to be more rugged to attract a more even split between male/female consumers. The independent rear suspension is a five link unit that will permit better ride characteristics and more room in the interior.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty has a seven slot grille that is most noticeable aspect on its front end. The grille on the Limited is chrome and on the Sport it is body colored. The front air dam is removable and offers better ground clearance for off road purposes and the pro front fascia is body color on both models.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty has more towing capacity and better capabilities off road than many of its competitors. It offers a high seating position and generous useable cargo space. It is more refined then previous year models. However, it doesn’t have the fuel economy of many of its competitors and for a compact SUV it’s heavy. But, if you want good capability off road the 2009 Jeep Liberty is the SUV for you.
